Looking back, how many total fights have you had, both amateur and professional, and what inspired you to first step into the ring?

"I’ve had around 40+ fights now as an amateur and professional in total," Lee shares. His journey began with inspiration from Carl Frampton, an Irish boxing hero who rose from the streets of Belfast to capture titles early in his career. “Seeing Frampton’s success lit a spark in me to pursue boxing, to see if I could make something out of myself in the same way.”

How did those early days in boxing—whether successes or struggles—shape the fighter you are today, both technically and mentally?

Entering boxing later than most, Lee had to "go all in" from the outset. This late start pushed him to “adapt quickly to the strains of training” and commit fully to the sport. Fighting frequently as an amateur at Halliwell ABC, he embraced the challenges and rapid pace. "Diving straight in and being extremely active helped my progress up to now," he reflects, crediting this intense early period with shaping his resilience and technical approach in the ring.

Which fight has pushed you to your absolute limits, and how did you adapt mid-fight to overcome the toughest moments?

Lee emphasizes that "there are no easy fights in professional boxing." Even bouts that seem straightforward come with a constant need for focus and awareness. “Every moment requires total attention; one slip in concentration and the tide can turn in a heartbeat.” For Gormley, every fight has had mentally demanding moments, with each opponent pushing him to dig deeper and stay vigilant, showing the essential role of mindset alongside physical skill.

What do you consider to be the secret behind your ability to maintain consistency and success across your career, even through tough times?

"Discipline and enjoying the process is key," Lee says, acknowledging that it may sound cliché but that it’s the ultimate truth. Staying in the gym, maintaining a healthy lifestyle outside of training, and fuelling his passion for boxing and his family’s future are what drive him. For Lee, finding joy even in the challenging moments and embracing the routine make all the difference. “Discipline gets me through the hardest times, and loving what I do makes it all worthwhile.”

Was there a specific fight or moment in your career where everything clicked, and you knew you had reached a new level as a boxer?

Lee describes his professional debut as a pivotal moment. “Having my hand raised after that first pro fight, after all the hard work and long process leading up to it, made me realize I’d reached a new level.” He reflects on the grind through the amateurs and the emotional journey to becoming a professional, noting how that night underscored his dedication and marked the beginning of a new chapter in his career.

Boxing can be mentally exhausting. What’s your mental strategy leading up to a fight, and how do you approach particularly intimidating opponents?

For Lee, the mental aspect of boxing is “on a different level.” He emphasizes positivity, self-belief, and enjoying the sport as crucial elements for success, especially when facing challenging opponents. “Staying disciplined becomes a constant strain, but reminding myself that I love doing this helps keep me grounded.” By focusing on the journey, putting in 100% during training, and keeping a positive mindset, Lee navigates the mental rigors of boxing with focus and optimism.

What’s something about your training camp in the lead-up to a big fight that most people wouldn’t expect, and how do you balance physical preparation with mental readiness?

Lee explains that the physical intensity of training—sparring, running, and maintaining a clean lifestyle—is well-known. But outside of training, fighters face additional demands: ticket sales, sponsorships, and self-promotion. “There’s a lot going on outside of the physical preparation,” he notes. Balancing a busy work and family life while managing these obligations adds another layer to the fighter’s journey, one that requires a strong support system. From my own personal experience, when boxing professionally; if you don't sell enough tickets, you don't fight - a task that, for most boxers dedicated to the craft, is a huge challenge.

Your team plays a huge role in your career. How do you rely on them not just during training, but during those tough moments in a fight?

“My whole team at Elite Boxing Gym has been unbelievable,” Lee says. He values their dedication, not only for training but for their unwavering support during events, traveling, and helping in any way they can. In the heat of the fight, Lee trusts their experience and knowledge to keep him calm and focused. “Their guidance and encouragement keep me performing at my best between rounds. They’re the backbone of my career.”

Boxing is often said to be more mental than physical. What do you find to be the hardest part of the sport, and what’s your personal method for overcoming that challenge?

While Lee enjoys the physical side of boxing, the mental aspect is where the real difficulty lies. Preparing for a fight consumes his mind, and maintaining discipline when juggling other life commitments is challenging. “It sounds small, but not being able to eat certain things or go certain places is a big detail,” he explains. His methods for managing this include daily journaling, meditation, and positive self-talk, all of which help him focus and stay grounded. "In such a tough sport, finding ways to stay positive and composed is essential."

How do you handle the immense pressure of performing under the lights, especially in big venues, and have you ever faced a moment where that pressure affected your performance?

Handling pressure has been a journey for Lee. In his amateur days, he often struggled with performance due to mindset issues and external pressures. But since turning professional, he’s made significant strides in strengthening his mental game. "It’s like practicing your jab over and over—learning to cope with pressure is something you have to work on continuously." His coaches at Elite Boxing Gym have instilled this discipline, helping him evolve as a professional.

When younger boxers come to you for advice about dealing with setbacks, what do you tell them about staying focused and motivated during tough times?

Lee encourages young fighters to “stick at it and enjoy the process.” Acknowledging the inevitability of setbacks, he reminds them that even the greatest champions have faced losses. “The legends of boxing were all mentally tougher than anyone else, and they pushed through to reach their goals.” Lee views setbacks as valuable learning experiences, teaching that the hard times build resilience and prepare fighters for future successes.

Conclusion

Lee Gormley’s story reflects the essential attributes of a true fighter: determination, discipline, and a love for the sport. His journey from an inspired beginner to an active professional highlights the reality of a boxing career, where victory is often earned outside the ring as much as inside it. For Lee, each fight and every training camp is a testament to his dedication and desire to improve—a drive that promises even greater things to come. Lee will be out again on the 9th of November, 2024 against experienced competitor Jake Pollard so keep an eye out.
